Those who had gave you the Wikipedia answer of 3,145,300 as the population of Hanoi is off by about 3,000,000.
The official estimate of 3,145,300 was already dated by the time it was published in 2005. The actual population is closer to 6,000,000. Hanoi's actual population is very difficult to determine, because Hanoi is constantly growing (between 40,000 - 70,000 new residents a month) and means to track the population is grossly inadequate.
The process of a Viet to officially move from one province or district to another in Vietnam can be very slow, and especially if one moves to Hanoi or HCMC. Most students don't register their new address, which is a huge part of Hanoi's population that is unaccounted for. Migrant workers, extremely poor and home births are also difficult to account for.
Most Hanoians that I talked to consider the population at around 6,000,000 in 2006. That figure is not official, but it's closer to the actual population than the official count. |

Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội, Hán Tự: 河内) pronunciation (help·info), estimated population 3,145,300 (2005), is the capital of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, it was the political centre of an independent Vietnam with a few brief interruptions. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but served as the capital of French Indochina from 1887 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, after the victory of Viet Minh over France in the battle of Dien Bien Phu, it became the capital of North Vietnam.
The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 21°2' North, 105°51' East, 1760 km (1094 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).[1] |

The 3.1m is an official estimate dating from July 2005.
While it may be too low, I doubt that Ha Noi now is almost the official size of Bangkok's 9m. |
